MY ROTARY STORY: MAYEN INWANG, PHF*
I joined Rotary 15 years ago, having been introduced by Past Assistant Governor Mabel Ekanem, a Consultant Hematologist. My Rotary journey has been a very fulfilling one. I have been afforded the opportunity to serve humanity in ways I never dreamed of. Impacting lives I don’t know and probably will never know, is a rare privilege.
Having served in different capacities as Club Secretary, Treasurer, President, Assistant Governor and Committees Chair at both Club and District level, I have come to realise that it takes little, with collective effort, spiced with love and passion, to achieve the seemingly impossible, the unimaginable!
Apart from personal gains in the area of total self development which Rotary offers through series of continuous trainings, I have learned to take a peek at life and situations through a totally different lens. I have a better understanding of others’ challenges and circumstances. The opportunity to serve others is a life time treasure, the rewards are engraved on our souls!
How can I forget Mercy’s excitement, the infectious smile on her brightly lit up face as I wheeled her in her new wheelchair, donated to her by my Club during my year as President?,(2011-12). As she beamed up at me and breathed, “Aunty, Thank You!”, I felt at that moment, a lifting in my spirit and peace I couldn’t comprehend.
I remembered the first time I saw her, on ALL fours, wading her way through puddles of mud and water after a heavy downpour, with her school uniform totally soaked, making her way to class!!😳😳😳. My encounter with this girl enriched the deposit in my loaded Bank of Life, courtesy Rotary!😀. This is just one out of countless experiences in my years as a Rotarian.
…And what about the Policeman on the road, who seeing the Rotary sticker on my car windscreen said, ” Madam, you are a Rotarian, I believe you when you say that your car particulars are complete and up to date!”💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾😀.
From the expression of pure joy and gratitude from beneficiaries of life changing projects to simple courtesy that we receive, ROTARY has given us a place in the world where every human should aspire to be.
I own a Rotary pin, among many others, which says, 110%Rotary. Yes, I am 110% ROTARY and more!!, Proudly Rotarian!
