My Rotary Story by ROTARIAN Nkereuwem Essien
Sometime in 2017, I was on an official visit to some Health facilities in Akwa Ibom State. I had a total number of 45 Health Facilities to tour in 5 days😲😲😩😩😩.
In one of those Facilities, I met my Family Physician PAG Francis Inyang who was the medical superintendent. He welcomed me to the facility and little did I know that he was observing how passionate I was about my job. In his words, “You’re very passionate as always, so detailed in what you do, it’s high time you Joined Rotary”.
Well, I knew Rotaract/Rotary wayback during my undergraduate days, I had so many friends who were Rotaractors and I was always attending their fellowships and events but I couldn’t really decide to join because I was afraid it would interfere with my studies.
In 2018, PAG Francis Inyang invited me to come volunteer my services as a Medical Laboratory Scientist during Rotary Family Health Days and I obliged. He extended same invitation to my elder brother, Pharm. Tommie, and him being a Humanitarian and Volunteer by nature didn’t hesitate, he joined me in the 2-days outreach at Etoi, Oron Road, Uyo and donated some free drugs as well.
Dear Friends, this Medical outreach changed my mindset entirely, as I found out that alot of persons who really needed HealthCare services in the rural areas were unable to afford same.
So, I was connected with Rotary in 2019 during the
“ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD YEAR”, and Past President Idongesit Domingoinyang, Inducted me during her Grand Installation Ceremony as President, Rotary Club of Uyo.
In July 2019, shortly after my induction, a certain Brazilian by name HUMBERTO, singlehandedly sponsored and sent Hepatitis kits for testing in Nigeria, and our Club benefitted from such magnanimity. I was mesmerised by the grandiose😲😲😲🥳🥳
Again, I volunteered. At that point, I resolved that there was no other option than always giving back to the society. I told myself if a Non-Nigerian could send cartons of Hepatitis B and C screening kits to Nigeria, so we could know our statuses, what excuse would be good enough if I don’t contribute my quota in giving back to my community and society at large! 🤔😲
My journey in Rotary has been that of “Self-Discovery” too.😅😅😁😁
I never knew I could play a Publicity role or even put down anything captivating for people to read, just like I am doing right now.😜😜😎😎
Rotary has made me to be more expressive and confident (still garnished with a pinch of shyness tho)😜
Thanks to Rotary, I’m better organised, a good planner I’ve turned! I associate more with people and Friendship just got even better.😎😘🙌 I must say that I have a Family in Rotary.
In 2020, I had a personal reason to celebrate my birthday and all thanks to my Rotary Family who supported me amidst COVID-19.
Sweet Soul, Rotarian Maryleony Essien adopted me as one of hers and gave all I needed, Bubbly Rotarian Ekeoma Madonna Chikadibia said she couldn’t have missed my event for anything else, My First Love and AG Eka Etuk was there, LIVE, and gifted me one of my most treasured Ankaras. I named this ageless beauty “MY First-Love” because she gifted me my First Ever Rotary PIN: the END POLIO PIN, even before I became a Rotarian.🥳🥳🥳🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰My big brother, Physician and friend PAG Francis Inyang was fully on ground to join in the Celebrations, My Visionary President Mfon Abraham came all the way from his Trip, all for his “Fine” Rotarian😃😜😅 and how about Rotarian Idara Inwang, my NYSC roommate? She didn’t disappoint me. So, I am convinced that I have a “GREAT SUPPORT SYSTEM” in Rotary.😘😘😘🥰🥰🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🥳🥳🥳
Now, to YOU reading this, The BIG question is: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING FOR HUMANITY WITHOUT COUNTING COSTS OR RETURNS???
Dear Friends, the answer to the above question lies ONLY IN ROTARY.
This Rotary year marks the beginning of my 3rd year in the Rotary Family, and by God’s Grace, I can’t even imagine what another 3 years holds for me as a Rotarian.🙌🙌🙏🏻🙏🏻
But let me ask again:
📌Are you passionate?
📌Are you selfless?
📌Do you think about others especially the less privileged?
📌Do you have empathy for your fellow humans?
📌Do you take pride in your business or job?
📌Do you need quality and good friends you can always hang out with?
📌Do you want to leave your footprints on the sands of time?
📌Do you want to be informed locally and globally?
THEN ROTARY NEEDS YOU!!!
I am Rotarian Nkereuwem Enkay Essien , and THIS IS MY STORY.
